WESTLAKE AVENUE, SINGAPORE 

Sited on unique terrain, this modern sanctuary strikes a delicate balance between nature, luxury and functionality. Designed to grow with the needs of a family spanning 3 generations, it also achieves what is rare in land-scarce Singapore: the luxury of having nature right at your doorstep; glass walls, transitional zones and carefully-framed views create a constant dialogue with natural surroundings, making for a visually interesting landscape.

Our collaborative vision with the client was to create distinct spaces that would grow with the family, catering to all their diverse lifestyles while maintaining a level of privacy for each. We carved out a master suite for the parents, a playful yet practical room for their five-year-old son, a dedicated space for elderly grandparents, additional accommodations for a live-in helper and visiting guests, a home office and several entertainment zones—all preserving a sense of openness that flows organically to the lush greenery around the property.

To fit these spaces within the limits of the site, we were challenged to look at space planning differently: an attic level was added in a unique interplay of spaces, carefully distributing the various rooms and zones across three floors, while successfully maintaining generous ceiling heights for each level. The unique terrain of the house, with its hilly rear elevation, also became a challenge that turned into a design opportunity. To address the proximity of the terrain towards the rear façade, balcony spaces were introduced as buffers, seamlessly integrating additional living spaces while working around site sensitivities.

The heart of the home, the ground level, unfolds into an expansive living, dining, and entertainment space—a zone designed for interaction and relaxation—perfect for karaoke nights and wine appreciation. Large glass panels flank the right side of the house, organically inviting the outside in. When fully opened, these panels offer a seamless transition to the external landscape, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor living. Surrounding nature becomes an extension of the space, transforming casual gatherings into immersive experiences amidst calming greens.

While we found creative ways to adapt to terrain and zoning limits, our clients’ love for clean, modern lines and natural materials inspired the home’s aesthetic. Every detail, from the choice of materials to curating the way light filters through rotatable screens, is a reflection of the thoughtfulness and creativity poured into the design. The result is a multi-generational family home layered with thought and intention.
